The 2009 Audi S8 serves as a unique alternative to the BMW 7 Series and the
Mercedes-Benz S-Class. It is a large, luxury model sedan - the finest of three
varieties: the A8, A8 L and the S8. The S8 comes stock with a 5.2L 450hp
V10/6-speed auto transmission combo that act in conjunction to deliver
instantaneous and responsive throttling. It features all-wheel drive performance
and also an individually-adaptable air-powered suspension system that makes you
feel like you're actually floating instead of rolling. Comfort and elegance are
the interior design standards as the S8 beats every member of its class for
finish quality.
The Multi-Media Interface (MMI) from Audi features integrated controls for the
vehicle's various features and electronic systems placed onto a singular
oversized knob. It's comparable to the i-Drive technology used in BMW vehicles,
but is a little easier to master. Although it can seem like a burden to learn,
the MMI quickly becomes a highly-convenient favorite for most drivers. The 2009
S8 can take you to triple digit speeds without breaking a sweat - a vehicle with
true Autobahn abilities. This speedy S8 5.2L carries an MSRP of $92,000 -
weighing in lower than comparably-equipped BMW and Mercedes models.
The 2009 S8 offers a $3900 Premium Package as well that features Advanced Key,
power open/close trunk, rear/side sunshades, both front and rear heated seats
and power-assisted door closers. Of course, the S8 offers the highest safety
levels through various standard safety features including 10 separate airbags
throughout.
The S8 by Audi is elegant, but not in a delicate way. Sure there's plenty of
luxurious features and comfort included, but these super sedans are actually
monsters under the hood. They will pin you to your seat - sometimes even when
you don't intend it. The throttling is so responsive in fact, that you can be
challenged to just drive around the neighborhood without sending people
scrambling and grabbing up their children. The low hood and shortened rear end
give the impression of a beast - crouched and ready to attack.
Wide-opening doors make entries and exits simplistic, but you might want to park
further back in the parking lots as tight fits are unwelcome. The handles are
styled like levers and are seated flush with the surface. The grille bears the
traditional Audi flare - sitting tall and bold. Its horizontal split design is
wrapped in chrome to accentuate its effect. The deck-lid spoiler in back acts
subtly with the reflective rear apron light panel to add extra classiness while
the quad exhaust tips contribute a tough, sporty air.
Fuel economy ratings fair decently for such an animalistic ride at 13/19 mpg.
Overall, the 2009 Audi S8 runs like a whipped ape and sets new standards for
performance-based elegance. It is a complex recipe to create, but Audi has
served it up in excellent style. |
